Live Poetry Event – Philip Larkin

Tuesday 9th March 19.00-20.30 City Gate Hotel
Larkin is one of the best-loved twentieth-century poets, a reputation based on three slim volumes of verse. We’ll look at some famous poems, including ‘Church Going’ and ‘Mr Bleaney’, and discuss the mixture of light and gloom in his writing.
This evening will be hosted by Malcolm Hebron. After studying English at Oxford, Malcolm Hebron taught for many years at Winchester College. Over that time, he published books on medieval and renaissance writing, literature and linguistics and wrote a guide on how to read poetry. Malcolm is a Fellow of the English Association, and as an editor of a journal, he has worked with critics and poets, helping them prepare work for publication. Malcolm writes poems himself, of course, as a daily habit; and above all, he loves sharing what he has learned and learning from others.
